Kim, Ph.D., has joined STV as Western Region planning manager with the firm’s Transportation and Infrastructure Division. Based in STV’s Los Angeles office, Kim is responsible for overseeing the division’s planning practice in the Western region. His responsibilities include traffic planning and analysis, environmental planning, operations planning, corridor investment planning studies, financial analysis, technical feasibility and alternatives analyses.

Black Education News was founded by journalist/writing teacher Christie Jones (Class of 2001, BA English) to provide writing preparation for college bound African-American students. Many African-American students are not prepared for the rigorous critical analysis that is required for successful college writing. Christie Jones, M.Ed., M.J. developed the Global Literacy Model as a response to the Eurocentric approach to literacy instruction for African-American students, which lacks recognition of the African-American experience and the African-American ethos. Most recently, Ms. Raley was a partner in the civil litigation firm of Sacino, Bertolino, Hallissy and Raley. Before that, she litigated employment law and personal injury cases for the firm Mason Thomas. Ms. Rubin had been serving as a Supervisory Field Attorney in Region 31 prior to her appointment. In her new position, she will assist Regional Director James McDermott in the administration and enforcement of the National Labor Relations Act in Los Angeles and six other counties in Southern California.

Richard Lewis '79 of Claremont, CA. has been promoted to full professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Pomona College, one of the nation’s premier liberal arts colleges. Lewis teaches The Social Brain, Human Brain: Neurons to Behavior, and Psych Approaches Study of People. His research focuses on how the multitude of biological responses to stressors affect cognitive and emotional well-being, and how cultural differences in the conception of the self affect how brains process information about ourselves, others, and our environment. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. Lewis earned his B.S. from the University of California, Los Angeles, his M.S. from California State University, Los Angeles, and his Ph.D. from Michigan State University.

This middle-school historical novel centers on bi-racial friendship during the turbulent years surrounding Brown vs. Board of Education. It is being used by school districts – Roanoke, VA, Hughes Springs, TX, Brentwood, TN – and according to early reviews, readership transcends easily to adults. Lucy, always a proud Bruin, acknowledges UCLA both in text and About the Author in REMEMBER AS YOU PASS ME BY. She uses the nom de plume L. King Pérez.

TOM TUGEND, MA ’58, was honored April 30 with a Distinguished Journalist Award by the Greater Los Angeles Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). According to the citation, the award recognizes “members of the profession who demonstrate good news judgment, a strong sense of ethics and a passion for getting the story right.” Tugend currently writes for the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles, Jewish Telegraphic Agency (New York), Jerusalem Post (Israel) and Jewish Chronicle (UK). He has frequently contributed to the Los Angeles Times and other publications.

With a heavy heart we must inform our beloved Alumni Association Friends and Members of the loss of Sylvia Pattison '46. Sylvia completed her Undergraduate studies at UCLA with a major in Arts & Architecture. She later went on to pursue a Masters in Education at Claremont Mckenna in 1968 and a PhD in Computer Science at Illinois State University in 1972. Sylvia passed away this year October 21st. She will be missed by her family and friends at home and here at UCLA.

Robert H. Ahmanson, longtime president of the Ahmanson Foundation, died of a heart attack Saturday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 80. Ahmanson served since 1974 as head of the foundation, which has funded cultural projects in the arts and humanities in Los Angeles for more than 50 years, his son William Ahmanson told The Times on Monday. See his Los Angeles Times obituary.

Sonia Romm Brandt was born in Russia in 1910 and came to the United States by ship when she was 3 years old. She graduated from Belmont High School in 1928 and then went on to UCLA where she received her BA in History in 1932. After receiving her teaching credentials at both UCLA and UC Berkeley she taught at Havenhurst Street School, Van Nuys; Hesby Street School, Encino and American Dependents School in Germany. For the past 20 years she was a substitute teacher for LA Unified School district and did volunteer work at Hart Street School and the San Fernando Valley Library Reading Program. Sonia received many awards over her lifetime inclusive of the Governor Schwarzenegger congratulatory award 2005 and Outstanding Educator Award 2007. She has two lovely daughters and many grand and great grandchildren. She is 96 years old.
